Amelia Pistrong Stern

 

A story from Neilan...

Amelia Pistrong was born in Radomysl Wielki, Austria on April 15, 1854.

She married Philip Stern in October 1876.

In 1890, they emigrated to the United States.

Upon arriving in New York, Amelia became a "modern lady."  She threw away her sheitel (wig) and would secretly give her granddaughters (Reuben's children) money to buy lipstick and other make-up.

She lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan before moving to Williamsburg in Brooklyn where she lived until her death in 1943.

I still vaguely remember the day of her funeral although I was only three and a half.  Everyone was running around as they moved me from one car to another.
