Joe Stern

A story from Sarah Stern Matthews:

In the 1930's Joe couldn't find steady work despite the fact that he would get the next day's paper at 11 p.m. every night, and join job lines each day at 5 a.m.

Not surprisingly, he began participating in demonstrations/marches by the unemployed.  And in 1932, he started giving political speeches on street corners.

  1. I enjoy every single story on this wonderful website. I have read this particular story which I find really touching and we would all do well to remember how easy it is, comparatively easily it is to get a job nowadays.

Way back in those times things were desperate. So Joe, like all your family across the generations did the right thing. My love and warmest wishes to you all Tim Baynes
