Happyville: 1905 - 1908
Happyville Saw Mill
The farm in Aiken, N.C. was dubbed Happyville by the local newspaper man behind the idea - E.J. Watson. He felt that the south was not getting its fair share of the hardworking immigrants coming to the U.S. at the time. So he talked two New Yorkers - Charles Weintraub and Morris Latterman into donating money to buy 2200 acres of land. Then he advertised in Yiddish papers.
In 1905, approximately 50 people answered the ad - 10 families and 15 individuals. But by 1908 they were out of business.
